The story takes place in Kamloops, B.C., in 1944 and has many allusions to forties radio programs, stars and fads, along with references to World War II problems such as rationing, enlisting, missing-in-action, Japanese Canadians, and the Nazis. Her new good looks cause her -to behave rather foolishly for a time, but by the end of the story she becomes sensible and a credit to her mentor cousin.

Hope Mathers, the main character, is overweight but loves to fantasize about being gorgeous and attractive to boys. Typical teenage trials and triumphs-overcoming overweight and have nice clothes, good friends, dates and young love-make up this young adult novel.
